Just weeks after completing the Back2Basics treatment program, former client Anthony R., 27 lands a job at hotspot eatery Old Town Creperie in Flagstaff, Az.

The program fueled Anthony’s confidence by teaching the importance of becoming a productive citizen in the community. “If I was offered this job before [treatment] I would’ve have turned it down because I wouldn’t think I could do it,” said Chicago native, Anthony.

The Back2Basics website mentions that addicts typically “lack motivation” and “manage money poorly.” Anthony said that Back2Basics gave him the discipline and capacity needed to not only hold a steady job, but to want to do so.

“B2B helped me find discipline within myself. Previously, doing little tasks was difficult. Now I can manage my day and schedule,” he said.

Clients take a weekly culinary class at Back2Basics with the program’s culinary director, Kathy DuPrez where they learn how to cook healthy recipes with locally grown produce, properly use a knife and manage a sanitary, organized cooking space. Anthony said the class helped him prepare for his current job as a cashier and crepe maker.

In 2007, Old Town Creperie was taken over by 20-year Flagstaff veterans, Jamie Whelan and Laura Anne who purchased the outdoor restaurant from friend John Conley, current owner of local Salsa Brava.

Though the UNLV Biology graduate doesn’t plan on pursuing a culinary career – Anthony aspires something in the psychology and sobriety field – he enjoys the fast-pace environment at Old Town Creperie.

Anthony’s favorite crepe is savory “The Jamie” which has eggs, spinach, basil, tomato and cheddar cheese.
