Client Journal – Volunteering at Oak Creek Orchards

Table of Contents

Once per week some of the B2B Clients go and volunteer at the Oak Creek Orchards. On the property they have private cabins that they rent out as well as a restaurant. The property is a former homestead and has acres of apple orchards and beautiful views of the river below and cliffs above. The land is situated in one of the most beautiful parts of Sedona. As part of the restaurant and rentals, they grow organic food on the property. The food grown is used for a seasonal menu at the restaurant. The organic farm is where we spend most of our time helping out. So far, we have helped get rid of structure and dead plants from last year as well as helped set everything up for this years growing season. So far, we have set up irrigation, moved the trails for the beans and helped set up other infrastructure. It is still early in the growing season so everything that has been done is preparation for this summer. Kate is the woman who runs the orchard, greenhouse, and organic farm. She teaches us about the operations of every aspect of the organic farm process when we work with her. Because Sedona is at high altitude there are a lot of unique farming practices that need to be followed. When the apple orchards are ready to be harvested, they process and sell apple cider. Kathy gave us a tour of the area where they process the apples into cider. For me, the thing I’m looking forward to is seeing how everything on the farm and property progresses as the summer moves along. Watching all of the different veggies and plants growing is going to be rewarding as well as eating the food we helped grow going to be really awesome. I think that the further we get into summer, the more interesting its going to be to go to help out at Oak Creek.
