Family Letter 01-17 Superstitious Adventures

Our latest adventures as recounted by a client journalist:

Greetings esteemed loved ones! This is client T, back at it again, writing to you all from the beautiful (and chilly) Flagstaff, AZ. Last week, as some of you may recall, I predicted shenanigans, and alas! I was correct! The night after I finished my letter to y’all, it finally snowed! Although it was only a few inches, it was enough for client A, who had never seen snow before. After a slippery start to our week we got word that we would be hiking the “very superstitious” Superstition Mountain Range. So your little boy scouts packed up our rucksacks, put on our boots, and set forth on our adventure.

Sunday we woke up around 7:00 am, some more excited than others, to do our last minute prep and feast upon a hearty meal of breakfast burritos and coffee, and hopped in the vans. The vans were essentially divided between music genres. One was the country/rock van( ‘merica!) and the other was the hip hop van. Once at our destination it was an absolutely lovely 72 degrees and cloudless skies. We left the vans around noon and hiked a winding and rolling 4.5 miles to our campsite. After we arrived, each of us separately began whipping up various “Backpacker”-esque meals, including but not limited to Ramen, Mac+Cheese with various creative additions, and our guide’s vegetarian (yuck) meals. After our AA meeting we found our sleeping areas and after some funny moments aggressively went to bed.

Superstition hiking

Monday came quite quickly, and Martin Luther King Jr. smiled down at this lively group of hikers as we stirred and prepared for our most arduous day of hiking. After we ate our mandatory oats and had a talk about proper pooping procedures we set forth on our quest to find our next camp site, after filtering/pumping some more water from some pools of rain water. We stopped about 2.5 miles in for some sweet journaling and some very mild rock climbing, mostly speculative. After that we continued on our march towards more water and camp. However being the intrepid adventurer I am, I totally purposefully *cough* led us down a game trail instead of the path, through a nice little marsh and culminated with having to climb a fairly steep hill side, up one side and down the other, to get back on trail. Luckily, the boys enjoyed it, it had a great view, and a few short miles later, we had refilled our waters and gotten to camp.

Superstition hiking

Tuesday rolled around and everyone woke up, thrilled to finish this awesome trip. After a scrumptious breakfast, an easy 3.5 miles later, we were back at the van. Following another beautiful van ride accompanied by some Tim McGraw, came and went. Then some mandatory derig. The evening ended with some in house bickering, vaguely reminding me of high school girls and giving me one of those headaches behind my eyes. But in the end, all was well. An in house meeting and movie cleared the air, and afterwards the boys slowly fell asleep. And all was quiet in the house (for once).

So until next week, beloved relatives,
This is client T, over and out.
