One of the best parts about Back 2 Basics Sober Living is the outdoor adventure therapy in Vail Colorado… Rocky Mountain High! What a beautiful place and a great time!
I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of the ski trip to Vail, Colorado. Prior to the trip I had only two days worth of snowboarding experience, seven or so years ago, so I was relatively apprehensive about learning again. I was also apprehensive about doing this sober as the thought of drinking again had weighed heavily on my mind recently.
While the learning curve for snowboarding can be quite steep, I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly I picked it up with a little perseverance. The first hour at the mountain was, admittedly, quite frustrating and my alcoholic black and white thinking at that point was along the lines of ‘this sucks, this is going to be a long four days.’ However, with support from the rest of the guys, a lesson, and a few more runs down the mountain, my attitude and technique had improved dramatically. I generally don’t play games that I won’t win or try things that I won’t do perfectly from the first attempt, so this was definitely a reminder of all the opportunities I will miss if I continue to live that way.
Having not enjoyed doing much of anything sober for quite a while now, this trip also served as a great reminder of the fun to be had in sobriety. I had a blast snowboarding and hanging with the guys, booze and pills were definitely not necessary. However, in full disclosure, the beer and whiskey being served at the bar still seemed appealing. At five months dry the obsession has not been lifted and there is still a lot of work to be done. Moral of the story: 1. always be a beginner at something, 2. Don’t drink.
