First Time to the Grand Canyon

Table of Contents

This was my first time ever going to the Grand Canyon. I did not know how I would like it, especially with all the hiking we had to do. I am new to the whole hiking and camping lifestyle, however the more I do it, the more I am able to learn to live outside of my comfort zone. Today we took the bus to Hermit’s Trail, which is a paved trail following the South Rim. We hiked around five miles, but it was fairly easy since for the most part it was all flat. The part I like most about these camping trips is the chance to build better bonds with those around me. It seems weird to think I have only been a part of the B2B Community for a month. It seems like it has been much longer judging by the close friends and relationships that I have made. Another cool aspect of going to the Grand Canyon was being able to participate in a 12 step meeting while taking in the scenic view. It was real nice experiencing the meeting where we did because it helps with my sobriety and during the trip I was celebrating my 30 days of sobriety. Most of my life I have had television, movies, games, and other sorts of distracting entertainment. In the woods all there is to do for fun is talk to each other. It seems weird to think I have only been here for a month. It seems like it has been much longer judging by the close friends I have made.
Today was the second day at the Grand Canyon and it was pretty brutal. We went down into the canyon from Angel Head Trail. It was 3 miles down and 3 miles back to the top, changing elevation by about 2,000 feet, I think. The trail started out pretty hard because a lot of the ground was covered in ice and was real slippery, but we all managed to navigate through it just fine. The rest of the way down was mainly switchbacks that seemed to never end. When we reached the bottom we just hung out in the shade and relaxed for a while, laughing, telling jokes, and some about how we ended up in Back 2 Basics Soberliving. It was pretty cool being able to talk to people from all over the country and the world. Later that night we just hung out and used our Life Skills to make dinner. Before rehab, life always seemed to be every man for himself, but here everyone looks out for one another and I really like that aspect of Back 2 Basics Outdoor Adventures.
