| Partying… without the repercussions at the International Guitar Festival in Zihuatanejo. |
By Nick D.
Our trip began Thursday when Jake, Kevin and I left Hunter house at 6:30AM for Los Angeles. Kathy was drving and although it was pretty smooth sailing and uneventful, it was an entertaining car ride. We made two stops, one for coffee and gas, and one for In-N-Out Burger. In-N-Out could not have been any better. I used to live off of In-N-Out burgers and sushi back home, and haven’t eaten either in a really long time, so it was a really good time. In between the stops we listened to some Slightly Stooped, as well as two members of AA speak from Flagstaff that Kathy had on a disc. They had a lot to offer and the car ride was filled with laughs and deep talks. It was really cool to go back to my home state of California. As soon as we entered Los Angeles I could feel the good vibes and high energy all around me and it was contagious. That night Kathy shared at her home group that she first got sober at. I have really bonded with Kathy recently. I go shopping with her once a week and am the new Culinary Intern. She was asked about a week ago to speak at the meeting and all week she expressed how nervous she was and how she was over thinking her share. When we got tot the meeting I found myself nervous for her! But as I expected she killed it. She had a really amazing share and I was so proud of her! I got to thank her after her share and it was a great moment. It was also pretty cool to get to meet a lot of her and Roy’s family, especially the ones who are sober in AA now. That next morning we left for Mexico from LAX. Traveling was super easy. When we first arrived I felt the heat and humidity, a wave of excitement came over me. I love hot weather and the last six months of my life I spent backpacking in Utah or living in Flagstaff, so it’s been a while. It’s also been a long time since I surfed. Plus all the surfing I’ve done has been in really cold water. So I was extremely excited to be able to live in the weather and in this beautiful place, and surf in it’s warm waters. What a blessing being here is. Our first afternoon in Ixtapa was super relaxed. We just hung out in the condo for a couple of hours then headed downtown to grab a quick sandwich then went to our first AA meeting here. It was a really great meeting filled with really meaningful and powerful shares. I can honestly say that I took something from every single persons share at that meeting. I also met a man named Mike who used to live in the Bay Area. It ends up that he was using in my home town when I was just five years old. What a weird thought that I didn’t know him and we were minutes away from each other, but we end up meeting at an AA meeting in Ixtapa, Mexico.
