Our group returned back to the house last night from my first river trip with Back 2 Basics. I have done some white water rafting before in Colorado and in Brazil so I am familiar with the concept.
My previous experience differed in that they were just day trips were as this recent trip down the Chama River in New Mexico consisted of three days on the river. We got to our first camp site late Thursday night, unloaded the van and set up camp and had dinner. Friday morning we awoke to freshly brewed coffee and an assortment of cereal, granola, fruit, yogurt, teas, and juices prepared by our river guides. After breakfast, eager to get on the river, we helped pack and inflate our rafts and soon we were on the river. Most everyone had a partner in there ducky which is essentially an inflatable kayak. My partner happened to be the guy who initiated the splashing battle. When not even 5 minutes into the trip he launched a bucket sized missile of water via paddle at our friends on another boat. After a few hours on the river we stopped to have lunch.
The river guides laid out all kinds of ingredients and we prepared ourselves sandwiches, everything toasted very fresh and of high quality. Once we got back on the river after lunch I realized that the river allowed each individual to find what they needed at that moment. For some it was lounging back on their boat relaxing and having a nice conversation with their boat partner, barely paddling and just letting the current of the Chama gently push them along. While for others the river allowed for them to let go of their seriousness and play around, splashing other boats, racing to rapids, and just goofing around.
I think most everyone on the trip participated in both forms of enjoyment. The river rafting trip was very much of a treat. I have enjoyed all of our tips, but the hikes can be pretty strenuous at times and some people become a little “salty”. On the river trip it was a nice change to see everyone having fun the whole time and in a good mood.
