Fitness in sober living provides young men with structured physical activity that supports both addiction recovery and mental health.
Our Arizona-based program combines gym access, outdoor adventures, and yoga therapy to help rebuild strength, confidence, and healthy routines during the recovery journey.
Back2Basics incorporates exercise and fitness as a foundational element of our sober living program for young men in recovery. Research shows that individuals in early recovery benefit significantly from 30-60 minutes of daily physical activity, elevating their heart rate to 70% of maximum capacity. Regular fitness activities help restore dopamine levels in the brain—neurochemical pathways often depleted by substance use—supporting both physical healing and emotional stability.
Our fitness program for sober living includes aerobic exercises that increase oxygen use, burn calories, and elevate heart rate through sustained movement. These activities engage major muscle groups and are incorporated into our weekly schedule. Clients participate in walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, and active sports like volleyball and racquetball through our partnership with Flagstaff Athletic Club, alongside our signature outdoor adventure activities.
Our fitness program also incorporates anaerobic exercises like weight training and calisthenics to build muscular strength, flexibility, and physical confidence. These resistance-based activities complement aerobic workouts and help young men in recovery rebuild the physical strength often lost during active addiction. Many clients discover that strength training becomes a positive outlet for stress and a source of measurable progress during their recovery journey.
Our fitness-focused sober living program partners with Flagstaff Athletic Club to provide professional training and comprehensive gym facilities. Experienced fitness staff work directly with clients in a supportive, structured environment tailored to recovery needs. Access to free weights, cardio equipment, and group fitness classes helps young men rebuild physical strength and self-confidence during their recovery journey.
Fitness in sober living at Back2Basics follows a structured weekly schedule designed to build healthy routines. Young men participate in gym sessions three to four times per week, complemented by outdoor adventure activities and yoga classes. This balanced approach to physical wellness helps clients establish consistent exercise habits they can maintain long after completing our program.
Modern recovery programs increasingly recognize that lasting sobriety requires attention to physical wellness alongside traditional therapy. Our sober living fitness program includes specialized Yoga for Recovery sessions that address the mind-body connection essential to healing. This holistic approach helps young men develop stress management skills, emotional regulation, and self-awareness—tools that support long-term recovery success.
At Back2Basics, through the efforts of Keelyn Riley, LCSW, E-RYT, CYT, YACEP our primary therapist, she pioneered the process to utilize Yoga for Recovery as a more holistic approach in helping our clients learn to manage stress, breathe, relax, meditate and more.
Keelyn has built an entire Yoga for Recovery program that takes our clients gently introduces them to Yoga when they first arrive and gradually guide them to more progressive practices as they journey through Back2Basics and learn to live sober. ‘We see definite changes in the client’s ability to regulate emotions, deal with conflict, manage stress and self-reflection. Yoga for Recovery has become the pathway that bridges all of the modalities into interpersonal wholeness.
