hiking through sabino canyon

This past trip we went to a place called Sabino Canyon down in Tucson. I was kind of skeptical of the trip going in for two reasons: One, we only had five clients going, and I was not sure how we would all mesh, and two, it was a backpacking trip. Our last backpacking trip was difficult because we ended up hiking 17 miles with a 2,000-foot elevation gain. Upon arriving at Sabino Canyon the mood was good. We took a shuttle to the trail head and everyone’s spirits were high. I was worried about how my ankle would hold up since I had twisted it the week before, but it turned out to never be an issue. Our group hiked really well the first day and we finished the first 2.2 miles in good time. We found a nice spot to camp, and settled in for the night. It turns out it was nice having five clients going on the trip. During community we were able to open up more easily, and call each other out on what we had done right or wrong. Each client fell into place nicely and we jelled well together. Day two was supposed to be the hardest day of hiking, and it lived up to expectations. We ended up hiking nine miles together, but it went by super quickly because of how fast we were hiking. We got a chance to stop and take a break to swim in the creek, which was really refreshing. Instead of cutting the hike short, and finishing on day three, we smashed the final two miles and went to a meeting in Tucson that night. We finished the hike in record time, and got a chance to camp at another site that wasn’t scheduled. The drive to the camp was beautiful, looking out over Tucson from up in the mountains. We got there, set up camp, had community, and then went to the meeting. The meeting ended up being a good one, but was kind of suspect when we got there. We had a total of seven people there and we were the youngest by far. The old timers in the program ended up being extremely accepting of us, and had a bunch of good shares that I related a lot to. It’s always nice to go to different meetings outside of Flagstaff. We got back to camp there that night. Day three we got up early and headed back to Hunter house. Upon arriving at Hunter we proceeded with the de-rig of the van. Turns out it was nice only have five clients at the house. Everyone falls into their roles nicely and we accomplish our tasks in a timely manner. After finishing we received compliments from staff saying how great we did, and how it was nice not to have to order anyone around to get to work. Due to how great the trip went, they treated to a pizza for lunch, which was greatly appreciated. We finished our trip with a final community. Overall, the trip exceeded my expectations. Everyone got along with each other. The backpacking turned out to be easier than expected, and we had a good time. This group is a good group, should be interesting to see what a bunch of new clients will bring to the group dynamic.
