It’s been a big week for writing at Back2Basics – both for the clients and the staff. Writing class, on Monday, seems so far away now; the guys have already been to Joshua Tree and back. But the clients showed bright promise as they polished resumes, cover letters and drafts of college entrance essays. Some are close to graduating from B2B, so these letters will actually get handed to potential employers within the coming weeks. Others are banking the skills (and resume templates) for future use. It’s neat to have conversations with the clients wherein they reflect on their academic and career histories — and plan for exciting futures.
Also, the spring issue of our B2B newsletter is heading to the printer today. We’re excited about an issue that will come out just in time for Mother’s Day, and highlight the struggles and the triumphs of a couple of B2B moms. These are courageous women who intervened when their sons bottomed out on alcohol and drugs, and insisted that they get help. Their stories are truly inspiring. We also feature some reflections of CEO and founder Roy DuPrez, as we conclude Back2Basics’ second full year. DuPrez didn’t mention it, but I will: what a great service B2B is offering in northern Arizona, to get these young men back on track with their lives. Congrats, Roy!
In a story about climbing, B2B outdoor staffers Robb Faus and Chase Christensen talk about why climbing has been a stellar addition to the Back2Basics outdoor program.
“The nature of trial and error with climbing … brings a lot of humility and encourages perseverance,” Faus observes. “There is obviously a feeling of succeeding physically, but this brings in a mental component as well.” Chase adds, “When the lights come back on for them, it gives me hope and motivation to continue climbing and working in sobriety.”
Speaking of climbing, it’s about 70 degrees here in Flagstaff this afternoon. It’s a Friday, the newsletter is done, and Graciela, Chase and I all have the day off. Time to grab the climbing shoes and the crash pad and go pull on some rocks!
