At Back2Basics our main focus is on therapy to help clients overcome their addiction. But therapy can easily be interpreted as sitting in a group or one on one with a therapist and discussing a variety of topics. While these types of sessions, both individual and group therapy, are important to the success of our clients, we also strive to incorporate therapy through unconventional and meaningful therapy opportunities. Among these is the opportunity to volunteer and be of service.
The clients now participate in a weekly service commitment at “Orchard Canyon on Oak Creek” in Sedona. Here the clients participate in therapeutic gardening. We begin by checking in with Kate, our volunteer coordinator. We talk about how we feel that day and what we are grateful for. Then Kate shares a poem with the group and we then participate in various forms of gardening. During the first week, we spent most of our time clearing the gardens from last years growth. We also enjoyed a picnic lunch in the orchard. The following week, we volunteered the day before they opened to the public for the season. Most of our time was spent raking the grounds around the main lodge. Enjoy some of the photos of our recent trip to Orchard Canyon on Oak Creek.
