A recent essay in the New England Journal of Medicine titled “Our Other Prescription Drug Problem” shares about the abuse of benzos in the US and the increasing number of deaths associated with this drug typically known as a minor tranquilizer to help reduce anxiety and aiding in helping folks to sleep.
Benzos as it more widely known is short for Benzodiazepines, a prescription drug that is widely used for anxiety and typically used as the first-line of treatment for alcohol withdrawal. It helps to relive mild anxiety and makes you feel relaxed and calm, but what’s hidden behind this drug is an addiction all its own. Usage of benzos over time requires higher doses to be taken in order to achieve affects realized in the beginning as the body adjusts to the drug and adjusts the metabolism to match. You gradually need more and more and through the increase, addiction takes place and it becomes more difficult to sleep or relax without benzos.
In addition to the essay in the New England Journal, National Public Radio called the drug out for the real deal… abuse, addiction and death. According to NPR, “while death rates and prescriptions for opioids still substantially outnumber those for benzos, it’s combinations of the two types of drugs that are particularly fatal.”
