With Back2Basics, outdoor adventure therapy is at the center of our recovery treatment program and rain or shine or even forest fire, won’t stop our group from making it happen.
This week at Back2Basics has been really amazing for us as we continue to watch the growth and nurture the change. Here’s a snapshot of the past week:
We admitted our first female Resident on Saturday. A young woman from a wilderness primary care center in Utah. Being our first female client, she has the opportunity to set the standard for incoming women, and she is doing a great job.
Flagstaff was also hit with a huge forest fire on Sunday, which has been a topic of discussion for our Residents and staff considering their upcoming backpacking trip. Though they live at a residential facility during a main portion of the week, we have a very active schedule, and they participate in the outdoor adventure therapy component, which begins on Sunday and typically lasts till Tuesdays. This week is a special treat for our Residents. On Monday we are going on a 5-day backpacking trip through the Arizona high country. The fire, fire restrictions, and possible forest closure have been a very real possibility lately to cause us to forego our plans, but it seems that all this will not be the case and it is not going to stop us. Our residents and staff will have the opportunity to head out on Monday.
We also took a hike through West Fork Canyon yesterday, lots of water and great conversation. Upon our arrival back to Flagstaff, we met up with a new Resident who had arrived that day. This new client is a young man from the local area, he is a great addition to our community with a good attitude and great sense of humor. Our little family is growing! We had to move the dining room table this morning to make room, so we could all eat together.
Pretty amazing to see the growth in just a few days or weeks within our Residents. With drug and alcohol addiction, once drugs and alcohol are taken out of the picture, some real changes start to occur. One of the paradoxes of recovery is that the individual rarely sees their own growth before others do, and that has been the case so far as we witness their journey. Each client has grown so much in the short time we have all been together, though there are always steps back, the general movement is forward, as they say “progress not perfection.”
We’ll strive to continue forward with our recovery program and focus on outdoor adventure therapy to keep the progress coming.
