three boys mediaPrime weather conditions take the Back2Basics long-term drug and alcohol rehab residents to Havasu Falls on the Havasupai Indian Reservation for the first time since the program’s inception.

Timing is everything when visiting Havasu Falls, a turquoise-colored waterfall system on the south side of the Colorado River, explains Back2Basics sober living founder and owner, Roy DuPrez. “Spring is best time to hike Havasu because it’s not too hot outside, and still warm enough to swim in the waterfalls.”

Back2Basics Outdoor Adventures staff and residents hiked 10 miles to the waterfalls and camped for four days and three nights, carrying a backpack filled with the essentials. The reward: crystal-clear blue water and a sense of accomplishment.

“The biggest challenge I faced was the 10 mile hike back from camp,” said 22 year-old resident Shane C. “I got heat exhaustion and felt I couldn’t continue, [but] after a solid water break and some help from our guide I simply put one foot in front of the other and pushed through until completion.”

All three residents were able to bond with each other and nature all while working the 12 steps. “Honestly, the beauty of Havasupai took control of the group dynamic and there really were no problems to face; we all had a great time,” said a current resident on the trip.

Through outdoor adventures such as this trip to Havasu Falls, the end goal is to provide Back2Basics addicts with the life-skills need to continue a sober life outside of residency. “What makes B2B different than other programs is that it is personal,” said a resident. “While other programs are more clinical, B2B offers you a home and family while helping you work on getting sober.”
