A New Adventure in Snowboarding with Back 2 Basics Outdoor Adventure Therapy.

This weekend, Roy took us snowboarding at Arizona Snowbowl, the local mountain here in Flagstaff.  When I decided to come to Arizona I did not expect to have a ski resort 15 miles away from my house.  I have lived in Florida my whole life and never been snowboarding before.  I grew up surfing and skateboarding, but I’ve always wanted to try snowboarding.

I had many opportunities to go snowboarding but my drinking expenses always outweighed my travel budget.

When we got to the mountain I was thoroughly excited.  I’ve found in sobriety that I love trying new things and that life has many to offer.  The first day I was nervous that I would not be able to ride but I actually picked it up quickly and with the help from the outdoor staff was carving down some of the bigger runs by the end of the day.  Kendra, one of our outdoor guides, is an expert snowboarder and her instructions helped me greatly.

Our last day on the mountain is what skiers and snowboarders refer to as a powder day.  There was a storm the night before that dumped over a foot of snow so in the morning when we got to the top of the mountain we had tons of fresh powder, it was a totally different experience than the first day, the snow was much softer and the carves got deeper.

Snowboarding is both a new adventure and a new love of mine and I can’t wait to do it again.  It’s just one example of the new joys that enter my life during sobriety.
