April 20, 2016 – Going Solo Gives Opportunity To Reflect

Table of Contents

When there is so much going on around you, with constant noise, going solo gives you an opportunity to just chill and reflect.

This week at Back 2 Basics Sober Living has been good so far.  Upon returning from our solo, I felt a sense of serenity I haven’t felt in quite some time.  Living in a house with so many people and numerous personalities living in the Hunter house can be hectic.  Not to mention the negative attitudes and predispositions of others can become tiresome and annoying over time.

The solo allows us to escape a constantly moving schedule and the constant fluctuations of attitudes.  This gave me some perspective and peace of mind which was sorely needed.  At first I was apprehensive regarding the solo as in the past I constantly surrounded myself with people and things to keep my mind occupied.

When I was alone I was usually preoccupied with the objective of either acquiring dope or money to buy it.  My mind never dared to venture much farther than that, however driving the solo I had a sense of calm and deliberateness that I’ll never before noticed by myself.  This mindfulness followed me back into Flagstaff.  The key from here on out is ensuring not to lose that perspective within the chaos of the daily grind back at hunter.

Since returning to Hunter it seems the proposal I had given the staff was well received (especially the outdoor supervisor).  I proposed we adopt a practice done easy week at the wilderness program I was previously at, which is that during outdoor adventure therapy trips we have meals cooked in a dutch oven as opposed to the normal dehydrated meals we have.

So we got a chance, as a result, to have more elaborate and delicious meals out in the field.  During the week me and another client got all the food packed up and inventoried for the trip.  It was interesting having the responsibility of this new endeavor in our hands.  We got everything organized and when it came time to cook except for a couple minor speed bumps, everything went smoothly.  Everyone enjoyed the meal and it was gratifying knowing that all the work I put into this was appreciated.

It made me realize what just a little bit of determination and follow through can do for not just myself, but most of all others.  I’m sure what other new ideas would be interesting to try out here but knowing that my suggestions are being heard definitely encourages me to think of more. When you are going solo and you have moments of reflection your creativity can rise to the top. Who knew it would be a dutch oven idea!
