Outdoor adventure therapy is more than just adventures its also about learning and even taking Spanish classes!

One of the most interesting parts of our Back 2 Basics outdoor adventure therapy trip to Mexico has been our experiences with Spanish classes.   On our fourth day in Mexico, we met our Spanish teacher, Juan, and had our first class with him.  Coming into Mexico all four of us guys had about the same level of Spanish understanding which was very basic.  We all knew some verbs and vocabulary but could hardly form a complete sentence that made sense. Our Spanish teacher quickly gauged our level of experience and adjusted the lessons accordingly.  He was quickly able to get us engaged and put our brains work.  The Spanish teacher Juan was very nice to us all and helped us learn with worked best for each of us.

His approach was to not have us studying words or vocabulary but rather just to have open discussions with one another.  He also immediately started teaching us words and sentences that were going to be used in everyday life.   Sentences like how much does this cost or how do I get here? It was always something practical and applicable that we learned.

The other cool parts about Spanish class were that we were able to take trips around Zihuatenado to practice our Spanish in real life situations. One of our trips was to downtown Zihuatenedo to a district with a lot of shops and food places.  We walked around downtown talking Spanish and also going into shops and pointing things out in Spanish.  Some of us bought things in the shops downtown and with Juan’s help were able to communicate and buy things successfully.  Leaving Zihuatenedo,  I feel much more comfortable with Spanish and I am very happy I was able to come here and improve my Spanish.
