Hiking The Canyon Changed My Life

Table of Contents

Back2Basics has been my home for the past 4-months. The adventures and tall tales I regale you with would leave you in stitches or on the edge of your seat. The bonds I’ve made here are something that would have escaped my conception six months ago, both with other clients and the staff. I will not lie to you, most days are hard work with little down time. Going to bed with a sense of accomplishment and pride is a feeling I haven’t had in a very long time. Have you ever heard a variation of either of the quotes… ‘self-esteem comes from the esteemable acts’ or ‘people will rise or fall to expectations set for them’? If so; you may understand what I’m saying, if not keep them in mind for later reference.

When I first arrived here at B2B, I was an angry shell of a man. At 5’10” 235 lbs, I lacked self-confidence and tactful people skills. After 4-months of strenuous outdoor trips and having gym time available, I’m a fairly solid 215 lbs now. I can feel my fitness level increasing. The first trip I endeavored to hike was four miles down into the Grand Canyon then four miles back up. That night the first line in my journal read… “F*!#… F*!#… F*!#… F*!#… F*!#… F*!#…!!!!!” with a segue into a variety of not very appropriate comments. Then to compare, about a month ago we did an entire rim to rim hike at the Grand Canyon that took 3 days and I loved it!

B2B has really helped me. For the first time in about 9 years I am content and proud of who I am. My people skills have improved, I’ve been making real friends here, getting into shape and becoming more comfortable with myself.

Reflection

Thinking back to when I first arrived at B2B, I was originally under the impression that I was only going to be here for 3 months. Having stayed past that point for their 6-month program, I can tell you for certain that if you are counting the days you won’t get anything out of your time here. The real benefit comes from participating in the program to the fullest extent of your capabilities. Engaging with your therapist and taking charge of your sobriety can give you a feeling of accomplishment unlike any achievable through using or drinking. Another part of the treatment that I absolutely despised at first but have since come to see the necessity of it, is the life skills. The staff expect you to: wake up on time, clean your room, make your bed, assist in ‘Deep House Loving’ (cleaning the house) every day, as well as meal prep, dishes, and wear a collared shirt for any activity except cleaning or gym time.

These are skills that may take time to develop but once they do, life seems so easy. I have gained a sense of pride, but not arrogance, mixed with humility of working alongside others to accomplish common goals. If you are serious about getting sober, changing who you are for the better while maintaining your personality and gaining self-confidence to live life to the fullest completely inhibited by drugs and alcohol, I stand that B2B is the place to be.
