Overcoming Addiction with Fitness and Exercise

Table of Contents

This week I wanted to write about fitness and exercise, and how important that has been to me, my life, my recovery in the past, and my current recovery.

I’ve always enjoyed being fit, and my previous job demanded physical excellence in all aspects. When I got sober the first time, working out became just as crucial a part of recovery as AA or any other part. I have an addictive personality, and becoming ‘addicted’ to the gym, it gave me a healthy out to feed that part of my brain, and increase my overall health. At the same time, I believe a healthy body contributes to a healthy mind and is essential to a strong recovery.

This time around, I’ve focused a ton on my spiritual and physical health, to make sobriety stick this time, and the results have been great. Although I’m not quite where I want to be yet, I’ve been able to pack on quite a few pounds of lean muscle since coming to Back2Basics, while at the same time shredding almost all of the unhealthy fat I had on my body. And for the first time, I’m doing it all naturally. It feels great. At the end of my residential program here at Back2Basics, I want to write another blog about this same topic and see how far I’ve come. But right now here are my stats:

Weight: 185
Height: 6 ft.
1 RM: Bench:225lbs Squat 315lbs, Dead 300lbs

I can’t wait to see what another 5 months of hard work and healthy eating will bring.
